By: Marek Shrapnel

Once in a time, every person needs to lie back and relax. Simply to sleep and take a relaxation in sweet restfulness. Have a massage, enjoy one's day. The West Bohemian Spa Triangle is a great location for the rejuvenation of your soul and body.

The long-subsided volcanic activity on the periphery of the Slavkov Forest was accompanied by the origin of mineral springs that have completed the region of West Bohemia well-known all-around the earth. Although Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) , established by the celebrated Czech ruler Charles IV, is the most distinguished spa city in the region, there are several other no less excellent spa towns in the area that are exceptionally admired with both visitors with some health problems and travelers. Although the beneficial effects of the local springs had apparently turn out to be identified in as early as the 10th century, spas did not in fact develop until much later, in the 19th century. At the same time, Franzienbad was established at the very end of the eighteenth century, followed by the founding of Marianske Lazne, therefore completing the "Spa Triangle". Local and overseas guests alike have been coming to get pleasure from the regional mineral springs for hundreds of years; the visitors' book of the spa resorts contain the names of royals such as the English king Edward VII, Napoleon III, famous composers such as Fryderyk Chopin and Richard Wagner, writers such as Johann W. Goethe, Mark Twain and Franz Kafka, or for instance the respected Moravian-born originator of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud. However there is much more. You can too get pleasure from the rich cultural service, go away for cycling, mountain climbing and seeing the sights trips, play tennis and golf, ride a horse, try water sports in summer and cross-country skiing during winter.

Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad / Karlsbad)

Karlovy Vary is the best well-known spa city located in West Bohemia. It was established around 1350 by the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia, Charles IV. Its imposing roads as well as colonnades are surrounded by tranquil forested hills crisscrossed with hiking and cycling ways that are best for pleasurable walks all time round.
A tiring cultural events calendar, numerous festivals & international conferences put up Karlovy Vary the main & liveliest spa city in the Czech Republic visited not only by the spa-goers but also celebrities. Karlovy Vary achieved its fame also thanks to its well-known plant based liqueur named Becherovka (nicknamed "The 13th Spring"), Mattoni mineral water, exclusive spa wafers, and Moser crystal work.
The healing mineral water from the springs in the valley of the Tepla River have been used by people from time immemorial - both for drinking as well as bathing.

Marianske Lazne (Marienbad)

The town of Marienbad (Marianske Lazne) lies in a magnificent wide valley in West Bohemia, 628 meters above sea level. An almost twenty km wide strip of forest with various mountain climbing trails passes right through the spa.
Marianske Lazne enjoys an first-rate reputation all over the world both for its medical treatment methods and efficient natural therapeutic sources, as well as for its scenic, enchanting surroundings. Almost one hundred old springs have been discovered in and around the city, all with great concentration of CO2. Some had been discovered as early as in the 16th century.
A sincere jewel among the neighboring neoclassical buildings is the spa colonnade created in 1889. The spa area is dominated by the so-called 'Singing Fountain' entertaining the passers-by with melody and light performances.
Marienbad (Marianske Lazne) launched its 1st spa season in 1808, but rapidly grew to become a popular resort amongst Europe's elite. Amongst its clients had been English King Edward VII., Polish composer & pianist Fryderyk Chopin and German poet Goethe.
The regional spas specialize in treating musculoskeletal disorders, and diseases of the urinary tract, kidney and gynecological problems. The therapies are based on natural sources - cold ferrite acidulous water, natural gas, CO2 and mud.

Frantiskovy Lazne (Franzienbad)

Franzienbad (Frantiskovy Lazne), founded in 1793, is a world acknowledged spa town located in the western part of the Czech Republic. Thankfulness to its neoclassical spa buildings & pavilions the township preserved the exclusive atmosphere of the early 20th century & is regarded as one of the most charming cities in the country.
The area offers mild local climate, fresh atmosphere as well as peaceful town life. Numerous parks around the city with its promenades & musicians are a just right place for restful walks. All these conditions add to the therapeutic effects of the local mineral springs that each year draw numerous spa-guests.
