Unlocking the secrets behind a dog painting

By: WadeH Crews

A local production called the innocents finally opened showcasing the talent of local stars. On the set hangs a picture, about which many strange tales have been told. The one who owns this picture, for many years now, chooses to not be known. The owner was traveling down the road when this picture suddenly got her eye and she suddenly bought it under reasons even she cannot understand.

Waiting for the clerk to take it from the window, she wondered how can she possibly afford buying that picture. School was round the corner and they needed her to purchase supplies, clothes and books for them. So she thought to herself first that she will tell the clerk that while it was a beautiful portrait, she just can't afford to purchase it. Prior to the attendant returning the portrait on the wall, the lady suddenly shouted that she badly wanted it and will get it no matter what happens to her.

The lady, after paying and walking out of the antique store wondered how exactly she allowed herself to buy it when she could not even afford it, and how she was possibly going to explain to her husband as soon as he finds out about her ridiculous compulsion that made her buy that painting. It was perhaps painted in the late 1800's or early 1900's, and it was a Borzoi, a Russian wolfhound depicted using oil. The subject of the painting, a Russian wolfhound was depicted in a almost straight on pose, showing only its shoulders and head, and for the few who have been trained to be familiar with such a breed, they should be able to notice this absurdity, and not just gush about how nice or lovely the painting is. Looking at the shoulder and chest, you will see that it is not well proportioned.

It still is a mystery how this woman, whose eyes were trained to know exactly how a Borzoi looked like, still went ahead and purchased the strange portrait. When her husband arrived home that evening to find the picture hanging on the wall there was not the blow up of overspending the needed money for a portrait of a dog, instead there was the same strange attraction that she had felt.

There have been many pictures taken by amateurs and experts of the portrait and yet no two photographs have ever come out quite the same. It was strange how the Borzoi painting would come out like it was three dimensional, while it would be flat at certain occasions, then there would also be times when the pictures would be in color or black and white but nevertheless, lights would strangely linger in the surfaces but the most chilling would be the times when a spectral silhouette would show at its right portion.

As the husband and wife talked about the portrait, they lingered about the possibility of it being haunted by a supernatural force, but he quickly dismissed it, stating that light reflections or their overactive imaginations are to be blamed for nothing could possibly be unnatural about the painting. It was a wonder how the big round ceramic dish that had hung on the wall fell to the ground but when they got it, there was not a crack for it was still very much intact.

The Innocents play producer director approached the couple who were very happy to loan the portrait to him after he explained that this would be great on his set, as the story he was doing is about the supernatural. They insisted that something went with that picture, moving into their home on the day they bought it, and they believe that lending it for his stage play, the Innocents, might be able to shed some light on this mystery. This being true is what they wish for at the very least.
