Travelling to Spain? We highly suggest you visit Andalucia and specifically the region around Casares!

By: keith lunt

For example its fascinating history, in Roman times the spa of la Hedionda, located on the road to Manilva, was already well known, and this is where Julius Caesar was said to have been cured of a liver complaint, thanks to the sulfuric waters that still pour out of the local spring. For this reason during the Roman Empire, Casares was allowed by emperors to mint its own coins.

You possibly will uncover the well-known spring merely off of the coastal road, turn left at Lidl Supermarket and you will unearth it on the right hand side adjacent to the aptly named Roman Oasis Restaurant. Follow the stream up the valley and you will obtain a white painted brick domed shaped structure. This is a roman mud bath. Duck inside, it is said that once you have bathed in mud you come out younger than you went in!

Casares is best described for the reason that a attractive white washed mountain village with stunning views sweeping down to the coast and across to the rock of Gibraltar. I visit the village every time I go to the region, 4 to 5 times a year, and never cease to locate a few nook or cranny I have not explored before.

The village boasts the remains of a 12th century Castle, around which grew the present town centre. The castle itself has a long history. It was founded by the occupying Moors. In 1361, Peter I of Castile and the dethroned Muhammed V signed the Pact of Casares, by which the Moorish King recuperated his throne, leaving Casares as part of the Nasrid Dynasty. The town surrendered to the Catholic forces after the fall of Ronda in 1485 and was handed over to Rodrigo Ponce de León, Duke of Cádiz. Later during the Rebellion of the Moriscos, Rodrigo's descendent, the Duke of Arcos, accepted the surrender of the rebel Moriscos, the Moors who had "converted" to Christianity. Casares had taken an active part in the Morisco rebellion, put down by Don John of Austria.

Casares also became involved in the Spanish Civil war, 1936-1939. There is a gate in the wall, high above the gorge, where it reputedly bodies of captured enemies should be cast out to fall to their death below.

On a lighter note the key fair (Feria) of Casares takes location during the firstly weekend in August. The day of the patron saint, the Virgen del Rosario, is splendid in the formerly week in September, and in the middle of this month too is the Feria del Cristo. The most indispensable of the Romero takes spot the last Saturday in May.

Where to stay? We recommend staying at Casaes del Sol, a beautiful community just off of the coast road on the way to Casares. It is just 1km from the beach. Here is an example of a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom property, Golfers Paradise, ideal for golfers and non-golfers alike!
