The VW Polo

By: Happy Hippo

The small VW, is an expensive car, but it is a significant upgrade, with about 60 percent new, according to VW That means engine, interior, front sheet metal and other exterior cosmetics, plus slight suspension tweaks. More standard equipment too.
Polo now has air-con, 15 in alloy wheels, front and rear fog lights and height adjustable headlights as standard. Central locking, power, heated mirrors and dual airbags continue from the old model. Options are restricted to a four-speed auto, leather upholstery (with front seat heating) and metallic paint.
The engine is a 55kW 16 valve 1.4 liter that loses 200cc over the old engine, has the same power output but less torque. Despite VW's claims that the 1.4 is a thrifty new-tech device, our city figure of 8.8L/100km suggests it likes a drink. And its preferred beverage is premium, further negating any small econo-car thriftiness.
The engine is willing and flexible enough, but gets noisy and harsh, much like the old 1.6.
Road holding seems much better than the previous model, but you get that when you replace 13in 65 profile tyres with Velcro-sticky 195/45R15 Michelin Pilots. Grip levels are high, and steering response quick if not especially communicative. The trade off is harsh rides that will make the CD player skip, especially in the inner city streets most Polos will call home.
The interior has lost its ugly-grain-under-a-magnifying glass look and instead is a funky and luxurious package, borrowing styling from Volkswagen's Europe-only mini car, the Lupo. There's a high quality standard for both interior and exterior fit and finish.
While the spare wheel is a full-sized alloy at least, the boot carpet is a bit thin and the backseats are unpainted metal, a surprisingly cheap touch in an expensive car. Front airbags are standard, but the centre rear belt is a lap-only type.
The new Polo has certainly benefited from Volkswagen's almost obsessive attention to detail and has a standard of passive safety you won't see in some other competitors, and equipment levels for which a Civic buyer has to pay more. But is it a better car?
