The Evolution of Sport

By: Mas Smith

People have taken part in sports events for thousands of years. The ancient peoples of Greece, Rome and Egypt all took great pleasure from sport and would often organise their calendars around it. Of course, many of these events will have changed a great deal over the ages, but the competitive spirit of sport has never gone very far away. Even though we do not have televised chariot racing or gore-splattered gladiatorial tournaments, there is still a burning passion for the many sports of today; football, rugby, cricket, tennis, swimming, gymnastics, boxing and golf, the list goes on.

Our intense love for sport has turned it into a hugely important and intrinsic part of our social fabric. In our pubs, shops, homes and workplaces it is one of the singularly most common topics of conversation. People just love to discuss sport and the performances of their favourite teams or players. And the results of football and rugby matches are in such high demand that they are even presented alongside the latest world events on our news programmes!

So it will come as no great surprise that something as enormously popular as sport will require specialised services. Football, snooker and darts all transcended the realms of mere leisure many moons ago and they are now viewed as being more like multi-million pound industries than mere recreational games. Sport, it would seem, has grown up. It has long since passed its days of a quick ‘kick-about’ or a game of ‘keepy-ups’ and has become instead a shrewd power in the world of business!

There are all manner of important decisions to be made each day in the world of sport just the same as there are in any large business. Sponsorships, player’s contracts, expenses, accommodation, suppliers of equipment and salaries are just a few of the factors to be considered within this massive area. And that is why we now have specialists sports law and sports-related business.

Sport may involve a great amount of talent out on the pitch/field/court, but there are also a great many skilled individuals performing their magic behind the scenes; solicitors, financial advisers and accountants. So many important factors call on the attention of those in a relevant profession and without this support, even the most gifted of sportsmen/women would fail. New contracts will have to be checked over before a signature is put on the dotted line, sponsorship deals will often have to be tweaked and financial matters must be recorded without even the slightest error.

So, the next time you are watching your favourite team playing in the Premiership, spare a thought for those who work beyond the glare of the limelight. Sport is most definitely a game of two halves. But those who work in the background are responsible for making the high profile half, look as good as they do. Without the expert help of financial advisors and experts in sports law, the players of today would often be totally lost.
