Scottsdale, AZ HomeCare Caregiver Shows 19 Home Safety Secrets For Parents

By: Captain Gable

What can you do to guard a senior loved one from getting injured? These are some measures to stick to:
Keep outside stairs and walks in a safe condition and clear of debris. Be sure the rails are clean and in superior condition.
Light stairways, halls and provide light switches at both ends. Use bright lights for Seniors.
Use night lights or bedside remote controlled switches. Yeah the clapper works too.
Provide handrails in stairways and halls.
Keep a solid bed stand beside their bed so their glasses and other personal items are close.
Position a soft material over pointed corners of household furniture including counters, tables or shelves.
Tack down the edges of carpets and rugs; take out throw rugs that slide or can be tripped over.
Keep pathways clear of pieces of furniture and other things.
Install handrails in bathrooms (mainly near the toilet, at the doorway to the shower and in the shower) and use non-skid strips in the shower and tub.
Provide shower seat and shower head hose for those unable to stand in the shower.
Avoid using oils and lotions in the shower or bathtub.
You can provide kitchen appliances with thermostats and timers. The elderly find appliances with signal lights and buzzers easier to use.
Clearly mark the “off” position on stoves and ranges so a person with poor eyesight could instantly tell if the element is on or off. Test some nail polish to mark the off position.
Set water heater thermostats or faucets so water does not burn the skin.
Install smoke detectors in the kitchen, bedrooms and throughout the rest of the house.
Keep a fire extinguisher handy and know how to use it.
Arrange frequently used kitchen items in an easy-to-reach cabinet.
Install one good door lock that can be opened easily from the inside.
Keep magazines and mail picked up off the floor. Seniors love to keep it all, who knows a coupon may show up.
