Acne is a skin condition, usually of the face, that is common in young people. It can, however, occur at any age. Acne is characterized by black heads, pimple outbreaks, cysts, infected abscesses and even scarring . All acne is a disorder of the pilosebaceous unit, which is made up of a hair follicle, sebaceous gland, and a hair. The number of pilosebaceous units is larger on the face. Sebaceous glands produce a substance called sebum, which is responsible for keeping the skin and hair humidified. During adolescence sebaceous glands enlarge and create more sebum under the influence of hormones. The sebum oil stimulates bacteria to multiply and the surrounding tissues become inflamed. As we age, sebum production begins to lessen. Inflammation near the skin's surface creates a pustule; deeper inflammation results in a pimple. If the oil breaks though to the surface, the result is a whitehead. If the oil accumulates melanin pigment or becomes oxidized, the oil changes from white to black, and the result is a blackhead. What causes acne it's not yet known. It is believed that a variety of factors play a role:hereditary, certain types of foods(recently dairy is believed to agravate acne), stress and hormones. None of these usually cause acne, at least on their own. Be very careful when chosing cosmetics because some types can cause a very mild form of acne known as acne cosmetica. Avoid using cosmetics that contain lanolin or other oils. Look for a product that contains at least one of the following ingredients: - Lactic Acid which helps exfoliate and hydrate the skin - Sodium Lactate has moisturizing properties and ameliorates the apearence of the skin by cleaning the pores. - Boswelia Serrata extract; Boswelia Serrata is a resin drawn from the Boswelia tree that has anti-inflammatory properties.
