Painter Credits Her Progress to a Couple of Paintings

By: AndrewS Land

This female painter got her first dog when she was eight years old. Before it died within the year, the small Boston terrier was able to make a lasting impression on the girl. When it comes to noble pets, they hold special roles in her life. You can say that she is an accomplished painter specializing in dog portraits.

Many Sunday afternoons have been spent by her in the public library where she goes through every dog book and magazine she could find. Her first dream was to become someone who is able to show dogs in trials and dog shows, a professional dog handler. Most of her time when she was 13 was spent in dog shows where she drew and sketched the animals. She was about 16 when a friend introduced her to oil paintings and encouraged her to make dog portraits.

When it comes to her skills, she is capable of painting magnificent landscapes, abstracts, sea scapes, and other subjects but she chose her specialty. When she began her career, she was able to make and sell quite a number of dog portraits telling her that she made the right move. The members of the family had dogs and these were what she painted at first. She did a picture of their own Boston terrier and this was displayed by a local pet shop after they put up a notice about her paintings.

There are two paintings she credits for a large measure of her progress. A fascinating little mongrel restored to health and adopted as a mascot by the animal humane association called charlie black was what her first painting was of. A striking Alaskan malamute, the champion phantom of the ice flue, was what the second painting was of.

Taking a Labrador retriever into consideration, the head and expression make the dog. It is difficult to photograph a black dog but it is more challenging to paint one. You can say that the painting she made of the statue of a jacket found in Tutankhamen's tomb was unusual. A number of Egyptian symbols were in the background.

There are occasions when people ask her to paint portraits of horses or other pets. From her husband comes tangible and psychological assistance. Holding her paints and brushes was the specially designed table he made. Whenever she shows her work, she uses the specially crafted easels and display stands she made and stained herself. To date, her biggest portrait was a three by four foot portrait of a Labrador.

Those with longer coats are more difficult to paint than the smoother dogs. What she does not do is pose the dogs. Dogs cannot easily hold their heads just right. What she does with the animal is observe it for an hour and this is so that she can remember its typical stance not to mention its sheen and the color of its coat plus the personality or character traits that it shows. What people agree upon are her skills in terms of being able to record these traits onto a canvas.

The owners provide the snapshots she uses. If the owner cannot provide her with a picture to use then she can take one herself and then blow it up on the screen. With the background and all, she lets the people she paints for decide. Sometimes, one chooses sceneries and then others choose plain ones. One portrait per month is what she does because of family commitments. Aside from taking vacations, she also catches up with her housework.
