Lawyers Make It Big in Billion Dollar Settlement

By: Jackson Arlene

A personal injury lawyer from Texas came up with a new way of getting money from the laptop computer industry. All he did was to file a lawsuit against a company on behalf of consumers over a nonexistent problem. This is a serious matter, especially if you belong to market for laptop computers. Five other companies have also received lawsuits filed against them, which will most likely lead to an increase in prices.

A $9 billion lawsuit was filed by a lawyer against a Japanese appliance maker, and the entire escapade ended with the lawyer getting a $2 billion settlement from the company. This company which also makes laptop computers made the decision to settle the suit rather than take it to the Texas court.

$147 million in contingency fees was what he and other lawyers got out of it. Those who had bought the notebook computers in the last ten years were given cash rebates and discount coupons by the computer manufacturer. The lawsuit was filed for two men who were laptop owners.

The men, who received $25,000 each from the settlement, claimed a design flaw might, under extreme conditions, cause corruption or loss of data, when the laptops transferred data to a floppy disc. These two men did not suffer and losses or damages despite the flaw they found in their laptops.

No one had ever expressed displeasure or dissatisfaction toward the laptops, said the chip manufacturer. The company received no complaints from its customers until the lawsuit was filed last March. The company stated also that it did not encounter data loss when it ran tests.

If the Japanese company did not win the trial, $9 billion would not have been the only cost of the company. Legal observers can compare the company's capitulation to throwing meat soaked with blood into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The sharks were there before the sound of the splash disappeared. Five laptop manufacturing companies who used the NEC floppy control chip became the targets of other lawsuits filed by personal injury lawyers.

Layoffs are becoming a possibility now that these businesses are being hit by copycat lawsuits. The worst does not end there it seems. One financial analyst from New York says that these billion dollar settlements would lead to soaring prices of personal computers. In the last two decades, the United States has been quite financially stable because of the low inflation that was partly caused by falling computer prices.

A few hundred dollars are all you need to buy low priced computers that work faster and more efficiently than those models that cost thousands two decades ago. If more laptop manufacturers are threatened by lawsuits in the same manner as the Japanese company, computer prices are sure to go way higher. This would be regarded as bad news by those struggling to make ends meet.
