How to Buy a Baby Monitor

By: Shelly Bray

The decision used to be very straight forward for parents when it came to choosing a baby monitor, but it's not so easy anymore. You might be surprised to see that monitors these days come with so many options, that you could probably come close to finding one which could do almost everything except for changing your baby's diaper. Maybe you are looking to have all of the latest high-tech gadgets, or you might simply want the most simple baby monitor out there; you really only need to use these tips to help you choose.

Do you know the type of frequency or channel range required?

Since other people may have devices near by which can pick up on the same frequency and interfere, you will want a device which offers a wide range of frequencies. This is very important, because the last thing you need, is to be picking up signals or frequencies from someone else's baby monitor, however, this is not an issue if you live in a more rural area or if you know you are the first in your area to have a baby. How much do you want to be able to monitor? There are some parents who need to be able to track every second of the time they spend apart from their infants. Others find that, if constant surveillance is available, they'll spend all of their time sitting in front of the system watching it-which can increase their nervousness that something might go wrong. If you need the added monitoring to feel secure that your baby is okay, you'll want to choose a system that has video feeds as well as audio feeds, as these can record and monitor your baby's every movement and allow you to watch the feed as it is broadcast. Other parents prefer the simple, audio only based monitors that will alert them only when the baby is crying or in distress. The type features you need should be the only thing that determines this part of your decision, because it does not reflect on how good or bad of a parent you are if you choose only the audio surveillance.

How many features are you looking for? Consider how extensive you actually want your system to be, because if you live in a small space, extensive systems may end up becoming to bulky and could get in the way of your everyday living. If you have more space available in your home, a system which includes multiple receivers may be a better option. If you choose a multiple receiver system, you should find one that will allow you to use the receivers for outbound communication as well as inbound. Consider as well that having more than one receiver gives you the opportunity to monitor your baby from more than one room, so that you don't always have to carry around the receiver everywhere. When choosing a baby monitor for your family you can look for many different things. You can pick the brand that has the most or best sounding features. If someone you trust highly recommends a certain brand or model, this may be all you need. As we have seen, you can get good objective reviews by reading consumer publications By visiting a variety of websites you can find lots of product reviews. You can also just visit the mall and do your own comparison of various products. You should only make sure that you've considered every possible feature that's important to you. You are, after all, relying on this device to watch your baby! This is one case where you don't want something that's second best!
