How I got Roscoe to sleep in his Dog Bed

By: Nadia Smith

My dog is terrific. I adore my dog and take him everywhere I go. Until of late my dog, Roscoe slept in my bed. In fact, I didn’t even have a dog bed. Some success in dating has changed my standpoint of Roscoe slumbering in my bed.

The day I initially brought home a dog bed, Roscoe looked at me like I was completely insane. I’ve not much doubt that he assumd that the bed was for me. Obviously he had no intent of going from a comfortable Queen sized bed into a dog bed.

Day one - I tried to show him how cozy it was by me lying down on it. Needless to say, when he saw me laying on it he assumd that I was messing around with him and it turned into play time and not test out the new bed time. I tried for about thirty minutes and then gave up. I am a lightweight and openly admit it.

Day 2- I was determined to get him to use the dog bed. I closed the door to my bedroom around the time he usually puts himself to bed thinking it would push him to check out the dog bed which I laid out next to the door. A few perplexed looks, a snort later and the dog decided he was more than happy to sleep on the couch that night. Roscoe triumphs again.

Day 3 - At bed time I took the dog bed into my bedroom and put it at the end of my bed and locked the door. Each time he tried to get on the bed I informed him he was not supposed to. The crying melted my heart and I quit after about 10 minutes. Yes, I’m a sucker and am proud of it. He wins another time.

Day four - Now I knew I had the key. I geniously placed all his preferred toys on the dog bed and watched him play with them. I was positive he would get tuckered out and fall asleep on it. I watched in great delight. He played and he played. And he continued to play. I started reading a novel. Before turning off the light to go to sleep I wanted to see him enjoying his dog bed, so I sat up and discovered that Roscoe was happily asleep…on my bed. He outplayed me again.

Day five - A few friendly jokes at my expense and several suggestions from my buddies and I was determined to succeed in getting Roscoe to sleep on his dog bed. I had a couple of his favorite dog treats. He goes crazy for them (kind of like how I feel about mocha ice cream I guess). I told him to sit down on the ground and I gave him a cookie. I told him to get up and he got a cookie. Roscoe was following all my commands and getting dog snacks.

I had Roscoe move onto his dog bed and I gave him a dog snack. I told him to sit down on it and he received one more treat. I then instructed him to lay on it and he got another treat. I rubbed his tummy and he curled up on the bed loving the attention. Could it be? Would he stay?

Sure thing, he stayed. He wound up keeping on the bed all evening. In fact, I think he had fun with it. Perhaps it was the distance away from my snoring that did it. He slept the entire night on his dog bed. And now it’s now 5 weeks later and he's slept each night on his dog bed regardless of where in the house I put it. It took a bit of perseverance but now I sleep in my bed and Roscoe sleeps in his dog bed. All is right in our happy household.
