How Do You Know Which Motorcycle Alarm System is Appropriate For Your bike?

By: Dave Schmid

Amid all the competing technologies or so called systems its hard to establish which is best for your motorcycle security. Bike thieves now do not need to start your motorbike to rob it they have been picking them up and placing them in the backs of trucks rendering your motorcycle alarm system worthless.

Now that you've seen basic motorcycle security systems you must see the new dog on the block! There is a newly patented motorcycle alarm system http://phantomtracking.com/product.aspx that includes something no other system does and thats motorcycle crash protection http://phantomtracking.com/crash-detection-technology.aspx using true GPS Satellite Technoolgies and its powerful!

The Lo-Jack motorcycle security system was introduced in 1984 and is structured on Loran-C Technology. To operate it calls for that a police vehicle is equipped with a unique radio receiver to follow the indicator put out by the Lo-Jack product. Lo-Jack works by emitting and FM based homing signal. A homing receiver indicates the target only of the homing signal; it can't verify the exact position. To illustrate the receiver can't tell if the homing device is 10 ft or a mile away.

Lo-Jack is also restricted to a a small number of counties in about 26 markets nationally. Lo-Jack is also limited to whichever city within those areas that have their units operational on the police vehicles.

Cycle Protect
Cycle Protect is probably a much more powerful motorcycle alarm system. It is a wireless data, GPS device. Physically the Cycle Protect is slightly bigger than the Phantom Tracker System and calls for external antennas which can undoubtedly be found on the motorcycle. The location of the antennas makes them susceptible to tampering and disabling by a thief.
In the course of an alarm occurrence the Cycle Protect apparatus text messages a pre-designated telephone number. Next the owner must get to a PC with an internet connection, get into the Cycle Protect site, enter passwords and then will be shown the location of the motorcycle. The owner then has to phone the local law enforcement and ask them for help in locating the motorcycle. There is no call center to notify the owner and police of a theft even; nor is accident detection available for this product.

Scorpio Motorcycle Alarm
The Scorpio products offering is a two-way FM motorcycle security system using a miniature handheld receiver. It works by the owner arming the motorcycle and subsequently if the motorcycle is moved the Scorpio alarm on the motorcycle transmits a radio signal to the transceiver that vibrates emitting a beeping blast. Although Scorpio claims ranges up to one mile this is based on a clear line of sight. Trees, structures, automobiles, altitude changes and other obstacles reduce functional range of the apparatus.
There is no recovery element with this offering; once the motorcycle is stolen the effective use of the device is finished.

Conventional Wheel Locks, Fork Locks, and Chain Locks
These products have been around as long as motorcycles have been around. They do offer some security by immobilizing the motorcycle but they have restrictions to their effectiveness. Wheel locks that generally fasten to the front rotor of the motorcycle have received a lot of awareness lately, nonetheless since a large number of motorcycles are taken by picking them up and putting them into a truck, wheel locks are useless in these instances. The same goes for fork locks which lock the front forks of the motorcycle into a turned position, picking up the motorcycle would make this ineffective as well.

Chain locks operate considerably in these conditions if the motorcycle is chained to a stationary object however stationary items are not at all times available in all areas.
