Gran Canaria - An Island of Dreams

By: Caspar

It is definitely true that, once you have visited the Canary Islands one way or another your very existence will have been impacted by them. You will either love them or hate them, but never will you be left without an opinion that you will fell the need to share time and time again with whoever you can get to listen. For myself, I have chosen to live on Gran Canaria, I enjoy Lanzarote, Adore Fuertevantura, Hate Tenerife, but Gran Canaria will always be home, and the place that I ache to return to.
What makes Gran Canaria so special for me? I shall explain.
It could be said that Gran Canaria is a better class of Island that attracts a better class of tourist, but I donīt really want to get into this for this article, I am just trying to point out, one of the ways in which Gran Canaria is different from the other islands
It is not correct to assume that all the Canary Islands are similar to each other. The overall climate is similar but each individula island has itīs very own unique micro climate, within the general system which governs our weather. This arises because of the geological amd physical differences between the islands. Just as an example, the maountain that rises through the centre of Gran Canaria causes the north and south to have very differing climates.
The most contrasting example I can think of is that of the comparison of Gran Canaria to Fuerteventura. Fuerteventura is now almost flat, and hasnīt seen any volcanic activity for a very long time now so this hasnīt not been reversed. Although the volcanoes of Gran Canaria, are now considered to be dead, the mountain still is very much in existence and the erosion that Fuerteventura has suffered has not happened here, therefore the winds that blow right across Fuerteventura, when they get to Gran Canaria the mountain kind of breaks it apart and redirects it around the island, lessening itīs corrosive effects, and creating the diversity in the climate.
In as much as the islands are different they are similar too. This doesnīt help us writers sometimes, but there you have it. Palm trees are prevalent are on all of the islands as indeed are other plant species. The islands are extremely important botanically, given that they are home to thousands of endemic species. You can see this when you take a look at the latin names of some plants. Canarii, and Canariensis, mean coming from, or discovered in the Canary Islands. Some of the endemic species belonging to the islands have recieved a protected status because they will only grow on these lovely little islands. Then there are the beaches, which collectively stretch for miles, and are decorated with sands of varying colours ranging from almost black to nearly white, and of course the traditional golden colour that we all associate with our summer holidays.
Thatīs all the fact stuff that iīd like to share with right now, letīs get on with how I reall see the island of Gran Canaria.
I am lucky enough to live on Gran Canaria, but you know that already. How lucky? Well, as I am sat here writing, and to be honest getting a little carried away in my thoughts, I have an incredible view. Right ahead of me as I look out of my window I look straight out to the Atlantic Ocean, which is just the other side of a small parking area in front of our building, and the only blocking the view is a couple of palm trees that are just swaying lightly in the warm summer breeze. {If I could design a paradise, I think it would probably look something like this.|Belinda Carlisle was right, Heaven definitely is a place on earth and it is right here.|Could it ever get any better than this? I donīt think so}
By day, you can drift away inside your imagination encouraged by delicate birdsong, and by night be sung to sleep by the chirruping crickets, all the while allowing yourself to be bathed in the warmth of the sun, as it kisses your skin to a delicate golden glow, all feeding your imagination, as you dream dreams you never realised were possible.

Every now and then I find wanting something a little different from this Island I call home. Sometimes the beach just isnīt what fires my imagination. Thankfully Gran Canaria has the answer, and I get into my car and wander off up steep winding roads to the mountains. Sometimes I will take a rest at one of the reservoirs that hide among the pine forests that cling to the mountain tops. In a flight of fancy I will gather myself and my thoughts together, and push on, ever upwards I go to reach the summit of my kingdom. I want to get there, I have to get there, I need to see all that is mine, and then finally I arrive. For a few slow, lingering moments, I am king of all I survey, as I perform a 360 turn to take in and understand the glory of all there is to see. Wonder at the place where my world and the next meet. I want to stay here. I could stay here, if only I was allowed, for this place is truly magical and filled with wonder, and I am it, yet it is me, and as I leave I steal a glance back to the place I am leaving realising that forever I am Gran Canaria, and Gran Canaria is me.
The real power of Gran Canaria is that it will never leave you unaffected. Whatever they are, love it or hate it, once you have visited, you will always have feelings for Gran Canaria, that tun very deep indeed. My wish though, would be that, you too find Gran Canaria, inspiring and truly wondeful. I would wish that you could see Gran Canaria the way I do. Until the next time then. And who knows, one day maybe one we shall meet on a beach or share a mountain top moment together.

I am originally from England, and I settled in Gran Canaria 8 years ago with my partner and family, after falling in love with this magical island. Whilst still learning about Gran Canaria, and I hope that never stops, we decided to create www.justgrancanaria.com. It was originally intended to be a holiday booking site, but that has all changed now. www.justgrancanaria.com has evolved into the perfect site for tourists and r
