Goal-Setting - The Olympian Secret

By: Will Edwards

Sometimes, on my workshops, I will ask people to write down their three of four most important goals. It’s a constant source of amazement to me when some people sit there wondering what to write because it strikes me that, if you have set your goals properly, you should have absolutely no problem writing them down right off the top of your head.

But it seems that many people who think they have goals actually don’t have goals at all. In fact, this used to be true of me also – I used to think I had goals when in reality, I had not properly defined them. The first step to achieving your goals is to get them properly defined, so this is an important step in goal achievement – essentially, your goals should be SMART; that is ...

S – Specific
M – Measureable
A – Achievable
R – Realistic
T – Time-Tabled

If your goals fail on these criteria, they are quite simply, not properly defined.

There is a great deal of difference between the fundamentally related concepts of Vision, Mission and Goals. It is not necessary for you to quantify your Vision and Mission in this way, but for those important goals, you should indeed ensure they pass this simple test because each individual goal, in essence, should represent an individual step along the way to achieving your Mission and Vision.

This process of goal setting is used by all top-athletes and high-achievers everywhere, without exception. On one occasion, when attending a talk by the Olympic athlete, Roger Black, I learned that top athletes actually set both performance and outcome goals.

This was a really interesting revelation for me. Most people who set goals in business, it seems, tend to set outcome goals rather than performance goals. Learning to set both outcome and performance goals helps to get people naturally focussed on the targeted action that leads to goal-achievement.

So you see, when your goals are properly defined, they are very easy to break down into the specific steps or actions that need to be accomplished over the course of time.
