Getting value for money on short breaks

By: Andy Holiday

Saving money on your annual holiday.
At the moment lots of people are cutting back and looking for ways to cut back where possible on their spending. Few are willing to compromise on their breaks as these are percieved as essential in todays high pressured busy world. However there are discounts to be made when it comes to booking a break abroad.
Why not have more breaks but don't go for as long. Going for a 3 day break will still allow time to relax from your busy weekly routine and get away from work. So how can one effectively take more breaks but spend less money on them?
Avoid flying and long haul breaks.
The expensive costs of flights, combined with the frustrations of airport checkins all add up to a large amount of delay as well as extra costs. A weekend break will really not work if you spend a large proportion of your time travelling (or waiting to travel.)
Options from England are many and varied due to the close proximity of continental Europe and the available of a plethora of travel choices and options. It is worth noting at this stage that there are very good public transport systems around France, Belgium and Holland and all major cities and towns are very good at catering for the travelling public.
With this in mind we recommend that you consider the following 2 options of travel from the UK. The first is the various ferry services from ports along the South Coast and the second is using the high speed channel tunnel rail link with terminals in the South east.
Ferries, there are a number of popular ferry services from ports along the south coast of the UK. Carriers such as P&O, Seafrance, Condor and Norfolk line. Ferry come in two varieties, a traditional ferry which has many onboard facilities and a capacity for 100's of cars and passengers and a slower crossing time or the smaller catamaran ferry which has a lower capacity for cars and passengers and doesn't have as wide a choice of on board facilties as the Ferry but will typically make the cross channel crossing in a fraction of the time a ferry would.
Rail travel is another option since the channel tunnel opened. The two carriers from the UK include Eurotunnel and Eurostar and it is worth noting that they each offer wildly varying services.
So Eurotunnel is only for cars and trucks, travellers stay inside their vehicles for the journey (or can get out and wonder the carraige they are in). Travel takes place from Folkestone to Calais only with no stops on the way or beyond these destinations. Travel is quick and convenient with trains running at least every 30 minutes running 24/7.
Eurostar is more akin to a flight, where foot passengers only are taken. Journeys can start from London and Ashford and go directly to Paris and other popular cities in very short journey times. For those wanting to use the excellent continental passenger services around cities this is an ideal option and gives one the freedom and a simple way to explore northern France. Once in a main destination you can easily get trains to other French destinations. Even if your hotel is a distance away from the station there are excellent and helpful passenger services by car or bus. Eurostar runs daytime/early evening only and times vary from hourly to an off season four trains per day, depending on your destination selected and the season you travel in.
So how can you guarantee great prices and a trouble free break? The cheapest deals ometimes come from sourcing a hotel and travel deal separatelyonline, but these can be a major headache should one element of your booking get cancelled. Sometimes hotels overbook or industrial action can also mean delays in travel or even cancelled travel and it is really hard getting refunds from all parties in this situation. However using a travel provider with a trust fund gives a degree of protection. In difficult situations where they will advise and provide alternatives without you having to worry about phoning round yourself. Prices are actually genearlly very cheap, as the larger tour operators block buying of travel and room allocations mean discounts and in times of trouble extra leverage over the transport and accommodation aspects of the booking.
When it comes to getting the cheapest price we suggest that you get quotes for different times of the day and different days of the week. An low peak travel tarrif can be substantially cheaper than an on peak rate. A good travel advisor is able to provide tips on the most cost effective times to travel in. With many travel options it also proves to be much cheaper the further in advance you wish to travel. Book at least a couple of weeks in advance for the maximum discount.
We also strongly recommend that you obtain travel insurance which protects you in the event that due to health issues (your party or even close family members)either for you or your close family you are unable to travel.
