Five Reasons to Choose Phangan Island as Your Holiday Destination

By: Malcolm Middle

There is a place considered an island Utopia and that place is the south of Thailand. There are abundant elements that account for the renown that these islands have including the chilled out atmosphere, the wonderful tropical climate and the astoundingly sublime beaches. Folks arrive from all over the world to experience the tranquility, allure, quietness and harmony that comes from vacationing on Thailand's southern island Utopias.
To the perception of the neophyte traveler at the very first stages of considering his or her visit to Thailand, every "Shangri-la islands" may appear exactly the same: every island is tropical (in the classic sense and climate wise), picturesque and serene. But in fact, a more thorough examination would show that every island, just like each individual traveler, has its own set of unique qualities. The price of a visit in some islands may turn out to be a shockingly costly proposition, while touring other islands can be quite cheap; some islands are dramatically harmonious while others are loaded with exciting nightlife activities; some islands haeve the ideal conditions for divers while others are ideal for backpackers.
Having researched the huge differences of each island in southern Thailand, I've decided that the ideal Thai island for almost any vacation has to be Phangan Island. I say this because Phangan Thailand has the unique ability to mold itself to the desires of almost every visitor. Excepting city life (Koh Phangan Thailand is an island after all), you can find nearly any activity you want to enjoy on your holiday. Below you can read about the top five things that make Koh Phangan the perfect holiday choice.
1. The best value for your money. Until recently, Koh Phangan had a strong renown of a backpackers' island. Because of this, the island's prices had been adjusted to the target audience. Food and rooms on the island cost shockingly low, so that even a traveler with a budget of $30 per day can provide himself or herself with a reasonable, almost western life standard on the island, which includes air conditioned accommodations and tasty meals. During the past several years, when more spoiled tourists discovered this island, local entrepreneurs started to build luxury spaces. Even so, the best quality resort in Koh Phangan is still cheaper, on average, in comparison with the same standard accommodation offered on other islands.
2. The rare chance to experience the "old school" island Shangri-la. Even the undying lovers of Thailand will agree, that the time when the "Shangri-la islands" were the place in which one can recline on an isolated beach and share their musings with a single palm tree, are a thing of the past. Even so, in Koh Phangan one can find some "reservations" of isolated beautiful beaches with but a small choice of accommodation, such as Haad Thong Reng, Haad Yao and Haad Sadet. Some of these forgotten locations feature about three dozens bungalows sheltered in the midst of the jungle.
3 - What is considered the top diving in the world. The Gulf of Thailand has long been considered a great diving spot due to the variety of tropical life and the crystal clear waters. While numerous scuba divers still prefer more out of the way dive locations in Thailand like the nearby Koh Tao and the Similan Islands in the Andaman Sea, Koh Phangan is still a great place to scuba dive and snorkel. You can dive right from the beaches or it serves as a good base for nearby dive sites that can be reached in several hours by boat. Both Koh Ma, a nearby island connected to Phangan by a sandbar and Ang Thong National Marine Park are great locations for diving and easily accessible from Koh Phangan Thailand.
4 - No information about Koh Phangan Thailand would be complete without mentioning the Full Moon Party, which has grown to be one of the largest ongoing parties in the world. Each month on the date of the full moon, Phangan becomes home to up to 30,000 revelers from around the world. Even if parties aren't your thing normally it's worth it to come to this scene because it's such a unique experience.
5. To experience completely different travel activities. Koh Phangan is quite a small sized island (about 170 km2), but it offers a widest diversity of activities. You can come on a Sunday, as a backpacker to Haad Rin Beach, become a certified diver on Monday in Koh Ma and turn into a seasoned partygoer on Tuesday as you take part in the over the top full moon party. If you're able to get out of bed on Wednesday morning, you can talk with local Thai's in the fishermen's village Chaloklum. Additionally, you can join forces with your sportsperson alter ego and go mountain trekking on Thursday; and on Friday you'll have the once in a lifetime opportunity to pretend you are an ancient Thai warrior on top of an elephant's back in Phangan Safari. On Saturday, you can try life as a sheikh in a luxury resort with a spa...and maybe get the opportunity to write a novel on the seven most amazing days of your life.
