Dog Bed - How I Got Roscoe to Sleep in his Dog Bed

By: Sam Ranger

My dog is wonderful. I love my dog and take him everywhere I go. Until of late my dog, Roscoe slept in my bed. In fact, I did not even possess a dog bed. Some success in dating has changed my perspective of Roscoe sleeping in my bed.

The day I initially brought home a dog bed, Roscoe looked at me as if I was completely crazy. I have little doubt that he thought that the bed was for me. He obviously had no plan of going from a comfortable Queen sized bed in favor of a dog bed.

Day one - I tried to show him how relaxing it was by me laying on it. Of course, when he saw me laying on it he thought that I was playing with him and it evolved into play time instead of test out the new bed time. I tried for about a half-hour and then gave up. I am a lightweight and freely admit it.

Day two- I was determined to get him to sleep in the dog bed. I locked the door to my bedroom about the time he generally puts himself to bed thinking it would make him to try out the dog bed which I laid out next to the door. A few confused looks, a huff and puff later and the dog determined he was more than happy to sleep on the couch that night. Roscoe wins yet again.

Day 3 - At bed time I brought the dog bed into my bedroom and put it at the end of my bed and closed the door. Whenever he attempted to get on the bed I explained to him he was not allowed to. The whimpering melted my heart and I stopped after about ten minutes. Yes, I am a sucker and am proud of it. He wins another time.

Day 4 - Now I was positive I had the key. I geniously positioned all his favorite toys on the dog bed and watched him play with them. I knew he would get tired and go to sleep on it. I watched in great delight. He played and he played. And he continued to play. I began reading a book. Before turning off the light to go to sleep I wanted to see him enjoying his dog bed, so I sat up and discovered that Roscoe was happily asleep…on my bed. He beat me once more.

Day five - Some jokes at my expense and a number of helpful hints from my buddies and I was determined to achieve getting Roscoe to sleep on his dog bed. I took a couple of his favorite dog cookies. He goes nuts for them (almost like how I feel about mint chocolate chip ice cream I guess). I told him to lie down on the floor and I gave him a cookie. I told him to stand up and he got a dog snack. Roscoe was listening to all my directions and getting cookies.

I had Roscoe walk onto his dog bed and I gave him a cookie. I instructed him to sit on it and he got one more cookie. I then instructed him to lay on it and he got another dog snack. I rubbed his tummy and he laid on the bed enjoying the attention. Could it be? Would he stay?

Sure thing, he stayed. He wound up keeping on the bed all night. In fact, I think he enjoyed it. Maybe it was the distance away from my snoring that did it. He slept the whole night on his dog bed. In fact it is been 5 weeks and he has slept every night on his dog bed no matter where in the house I put it. It required a bit of diligence but now I sleep in my bed and Roscoe sleeps in his dog bed. All is correct in our happy household.
