Choosing an English Language School in the UK

By: Anna Watson

When it comes to learning a new language there are many methods out there to help you achieve your goals including text books, online language learning and listening to audio devices. For those that are able to travel, one of the most popular and fastest methods for learning a language is to visit the country where the language is spoken natively and immerse themselves in local life.
One of the most popular methods for language students wishing to learn English is to study the language at UK language school. Many students wishing to learn or take an English course in the UK visit England and enrol in a language school, but is this a good method? And is it worth your money and time?
Well let's look at the pros and cons.
If you join a UK language school you are immediately surrounded by others in exactly the same situation as yourself. Being alone in a foreign country can be hard at first especially if you have travelled alone and you feel homesick, so instantly there are people there who understand your situation and can help you make friends and feel more settled.
One potential problem is that it is important to try to speak in the language that you are trying to learn and not to slip into a comfortable pattern of speaking your native language with fellow students all the time, because then language learning opportunities are lost.
Language schools that are established set out to provide a service that teaches foreign students English and many schools are very good and will have a lot of experience in doing this. If you are travelling to a foreign country then do check out as much as possible about the school as you can beforehand as some are scams. Make sure that you check websites and reviews to check for accreditation. Look for student comments on forums and do check that the courses that they offer will be appropriate for your level. Good language schools and colleges have online tools to assess your level so they can place you appropriately as soon as you arrive.
Learning a language at a language school can be expensive but if it is part of a gap year or a pre university experience then it can prove to be invaluable to your career prospects. Look for language schools that offer a wide range of social activities so that you can make the most of your time in England. Some schools even offer support with finding a part time job which can lower the over cost of your trip and can help you to gain extra experience.
Think about the type of location you would prefer. Do you want to learn English in a large city such as London or a smaller historic town such as Chichester? Both have their advantages. There are many thousands of people studying English in the UK, the vast majority of them in London, and there are many attractions and advantages to being in a large vibrant city, but accommodation and seeing the sights can be expensive, it can be dangerous in the wrong areas, and there can be more competition for part time jobs.
A smaller town or city may not seem so instantly exciting but it is often considerably cheaper. In the UK there are very good transport links and many cheap deals for students on buses and trains. There is much more to England than London and often it is better to select a school where you can visit the best bits of London, but actually afford to live and eat at the same time. There is more opportunity to speak with native English speakers and smaller towns can often have a 'friendlier' feel about them.
In summary a language school can be an invaluable way to immerse yourself in UK life and learn English in the fastest way. Just be sure that you have thoroughly researched the school or college itself and the courses that it offers. If you can, email the language school and talk to the staff first to get an impression of what the service will be like. Make sure that you understand how much the course will cost and if there are any extras to pay for, and check out the price of accommodation.
