By: Martin Trouba

Once in a time, everyone wants to lie back and rest. Just to sleep and take a rest in sweet repose. Have a massage, take pleasure in one's day. The West Bohemian Spa Triangle is a wonderful location for the renewal of your soul and body.

The long-subsided volcanic activity on the border of the Slavkov Forest was accompanied by the origin of mineral springs that have completed the district of West Bohemia recognized around the world. Though Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) , founded by the recognized Czech ruler Charles IV, is the most distinguished spa town in the region, there are numerous other no less exceptional spa towns in the district that are extremely admired with both visitors with some health problems and tourists. Although the positive effects of the regional springs had apparently turn out to be recognized in as early as the tenth century, spas did not in fact develop until much later, in the nineteenth century. At the same time, Franzienbad was established at the very end of the 18th century, followed by the setting up of Marianske Lazne, therefore completing the "Spa Triangle". Local and overseas guests alike have been coming to enjoy the regional mineral springs for hundreds of years; the visitors' book of the spa resorts contain the names of monarchs such as the English king Edward VII, Napoleon III, legendary composers such as Fryderyk Chopin and Richard Wagner, writers such as Johann W. Goethe, Mark Twain and Franz Kafka, or for illustration the esteemed Moravian-born founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud. Although there is much more. You could also benefit from the rich cultural program, go away for biking, mountain climbing and visiting the attractions trips, play tennis & golf, ride a horse, try water activities in summer time and cross-country skiing during winter.

Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad / Karlsbad)

Karlsbad is the best acknowledged spa town positioned in West Bohemia. It was established nearly 1350 by the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia, Charles 4. Its magnificent roads as well as colonnades are surrounded by peaceful forested hills crisscrossed by climbing & biking ways that are perfect for enjoyable walks all year round.
A full of activity cultural events calendar, various festivals and international conferences make Karlovy Vary the major and liveliest spa town in the Czech Republic visited not only by the spa-goers but also celebs. Carlsbad achieved its fame also thanks to its well-known plant based liqueur known as Becherovka (nicknamed "The 13th Spring"), Mattoni mineral water, exclusive spa wafers, and Moser crystal work.
The curative waters from the springs in the valley of the Tepla River have been used by public from time immemorial - both for consuming as well as bathing.

Marianske Lazne (Marienbad)

The city of Marianske Lazne locates in a stunning wide valley in West Bohemia, 628 meters above sea level. An roughly 20 km wide strip of forest with various mountain climbing paths passes right throughout the spa.
Marienbad enjoys an first-rate reputation all over the world both for its treatment methods and effective natural therapeutic resources, as well as for its scenic, delightful surroundings. Almost 100 old springs have been revealed in and around the city, all with high concentration of CO2. Some were discovered as early as in the 16th century.
A authentic jewel among the local neoclassical buildings is the spa colonnade built in 1889. The spa district is dominated by the so-called 'Singing Fountain' entertaining the passers-by with music and illumination performances.
Marienbad (Marianske Lazne) launched its 1st spa season in 1808, but rapidly became a trendy resort among Europe's elite. Among its customers had been English King Edward VII., Polish composer and pianist Fryderyk Chopin and German poet Goethe.
The regional spas specialize in treating musculoskeletal problems, as well as disorders of the urinary tract, kidney and gynecological problems. The remedies are based mostly on natural sources - cold ferrite acidulous water, natural gas, CO2 and mud.

Frantiskovy Lazne (Franzienbad)

Frantiskovy Lazne, founded in 1793, is a world famous spa town situated in the western part of the Czech Republic. Thankfulness to its neoclassical spa buildings and pavilions the city preserved the rare atmosphere of the early 20th century and is regarded as one of the most picturesque spa cities in the state.
The area offers moderate local climate, clean air and peaceful city life. Many parks around the town with its promenades & musicians are a great place for calming walks. All these issues add to the curative effects of the local mineral springs that each year draw numerous spa-goers.
