A Guide to Beach Lounger Chairs

By: Jenny Hartland

Beach Loungers are available in a range of kinds. Some are extremely lightweight, for instance the folding beach chair, several let you lie down flat and others have more sizeable frames and are made for use at home only.

Wooden lounger chairs are more normally used in the home or in hotels because they are more substantial and more durable than their portable counter-parts. The chair part may be available in a number of different materials from rattan to cotton and might have removable covering. Cleaning should be a consideration when the lounger is going to be used outside because some materials easily absorb sun cream and may look soiled and unsightly very fast.

A portable lounger is appropriate for any outdoor occasion. It is possible to take them camping, to the seaside, to concerts or sports activities. They are light and typically fold up, although a few are deemed to be portable just because they've wheels. In such situations a better label for them is perhaps "movable" but really this depends on the weight.

Normally, a beach chair will have less padding than the ones that are created for use in the home, within a yard or conservatory. Plus, of course, the frames will be less durable. They are also intended to open out flat which is especially helpful if you prefer to lie on your tummy to sunbathe or even read a book. A number let you vary how far you are able to tilt back so you can just put your feet up and unwind, sit completely upright or recline well back for sunbathing or napping.

Some have even more complicated designs. Even when a beach lounger reclines to a flat position it is often uncomfortable to read as the only method to do so is to hang over the end of the lounger chair. This leaves your head lacking support and your arms at awkward and uncomfortable angles. The Ostrich lounger has resolved this dilemma by strategically placing holes in the lounger.

The primary hole is for the head. When sitting in a normal stance it is covered by a head support or cushion that's flipped back when you would like to take advantage of the head opening. Further down there are a couple of holes for the arms which allow you to reach through and turn the pages when reading a book which needs to be placed on the ground beneath the opening for the face.

As with any purchase it is very important to reflect upon exactly what you want before you go to the shops. At it's most basic, do you think you're in need of a beach lounger or a more permanent chair/recliner. Do you need to move it around? Will it be used within a conservatory or outdoors where it will be open to the elements?
